Taylor Park

The reservoir is located about 35 miles northeast of Gunnison, Colorado, in the Elk Mountains. The first 11 miles from Gunnison to Almont are paved Colorado Highway 135. From Almont, the last 20 miles are paved Forest Service roads up to the reservoir.

Taylor Park Dam and reservoir are major features of the Uncomphagre Project. Recreation management at Taylor Park Reservoir is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service, Gunnison National Forest, 970-641-0471 or call 1-800-280 CAMP for camping reservations.

Hartman Rocks

Hartman Rocks originally served settlers as a base for a grazing operation and later as a location for a sawmill. For the last several decades, the 160-acre base area that is jointly owned by the City of Gunnison and Gunnison County, serves as a trailhead for the adjacent 8,000 acres of federal land managed by the BLM. This area receives heavy visitation by a variety of outdoor enthusiasts including hikers, mountain bikers, four-wheelers, hunters, horse back riders, skiers, rock climbers and many more. The main entrance to Hartman Rocks is reached by going west out of Gunnison on Highway 50 to the turnoff for County Road 38, just before the Twin Bridges. Turn south and travel about 2.5 miles where you'll find an entrance and parking area. You can park here, or continue driving up the main road to get up onto BLM land. The informational sign at the base area will give you an idea of the main roads and trails in the area. There are dozens of miles of each, offering opportunities to a variety of uses at every skill level. Please stay on the existing roads and trails to avoid further impacts to soils, vegetation and wildlife.

Gunnison Whitewater Park

One of Gunnison's newest recreational attractions is the Gunnison Whitewater Park on the Gunnison River, built for recreational canoeing, kayaking and rafting. The community park together with the new water park includes a walking path, picnic area with BBQ grills. The trail runs the whole length of the park and creates great access for fishing the river.

The Gunnison Whitewater Park is a series of rock structures along a several hundred-foot section of the Gunnison River, one mile west of town. These formations create various wave dynamics that make rafting more exciting and turn the area into a paddle playground for kayakers. These carefully designed features are great for performing and practicing tricks within a small stretch of the river.
